Principle of reverse osmosis
Installations of industrial reverse osmosis pass through themselves, aqueous solutions delay dissolved in the processed water substances on the pores of the membranes. The walls of the membranes are semipermeable.
|If a salt solution and pure water are separated by such a membrane (1), then pure water without external forces enters through the membrane into the salt solution, which is diluted as a result. This process known in nature (metabolism in cells) is called osmosis.
||The process stops when the osmotic pressure of the solution is reached, that is, the osmotic equilibrium is established. If the flow of water passing through the membrane (3) is turned by pressure on the highly concentrated solution in the opposite direction (2), after overcoming the osmotic pressure, the pure water will flow in the opposite direction through the membrane. In this case, the dissolved salts remain in solution. This process is called reverse osmosis.
